Save Japan PMI

Japanese manufacturing PMI is released by IHS Markit and Japan Materials Management Association (JMMA); service PMI is released by IHS Markit alone.

PMI is a survey conducted on senior purchasing managers in private manufacturers or the service sector on their outlook for output, new orders, new export orders, production price, costs, arrival, etc.

PMI greater than 50 means the managers are optimistic about the business conditions compared to the previous month.

Save Japan Indices of All Industry Activity

Indices of All Industry Activity measures the producing activities across all industries. It comprises three indices with different weights:

1. Construction industry activity index (Weight: 5.77%)
2. Industrial production activity index (20.78%)
3. Tertiary industry activity index (73.45%)

Tertiary industry activity index has the heaviest weight. Preliminary estimate of industrial production activity index publishes ahead of the other indices; it's also the most sensitive to economic changes.

Reference period used to be 2010, which changed in October 2018 to 2015.

Save Japan Index of Industrial Production

Mining, manufacture, and other relevant industries account for 40% of Japanese GDP. Production activities and inventories in these industries react to any economic changes. So, Index of Industrial Production (IIP) corresponds to the movement of GDP.

There are 4 industrial indices:
1. Index of industrial production
2. Index of industrial shipments
3. Index of industrial inventories
4. Index of industrial inventory ratio (inventories divided by shipments)

Inventory index is an important indicator for industrial activities because inventories reduce and shipments go up when the economy is expanding.
Index of industrial inventory ratio is a leading economic indicator.

Machinery orders reflect a company's expenditures on machineries. The rises and falls in machinery orders reflect business in Japanese machinery manufactures.

Save Japan Machinery Orders from Overseas

There are three types of machinery orders:
1. From overseas (about 40% to 45%)
2. Private sector (about 40% to 45%)
3. Governments (about 10% to 15%)

Machinery orders declined considerably in 2008 amid the Financial Crisis, pulling down GDP. Two years later, machinery orders grew as the economy recovered. In 2013, Yen depreciation led to a rebound in machinery orders. In 2016, machinery orders showed steady growth because of BOJ's loose monetary policies and a better outlook for the global economy.
