Japanese population is declining and aging, and it has become the toughest challenge the Japanese government has faced with, and a serious menace to Japanese economy.
In Japan, the percentage of population from 15 to 64 years old has been decreasing since 1991. In 1998, the percentage of people older than 65 has exceeded that of under 15. Twelve years later, the number of Japanese population began to decline. The island's population will decrease by 15% to 108 million, predicted by the United Nations. By that time, nearly 40% of its population will be elders.
