Fixed Asset Investment (FAI) is the total spending in building and purchasing fixed assets, for example, real estate and infrastructure. It forecasts the future economic conditions; the economy gains momentum from large-scale FAIs.
Since 2010, Chinese FAI slowed down due to huge overproduction. The private sector is unwilling to invest because they encounter difficulties in borrowing from the banks that result from the SOE reforms by the government. Government-led infrastructure and real estate investing alone can't push FAI up.
