Q1: What are the estimated sales for the iPhone 17 series?

A: Based on assembly plant production data, this year’s iPhone 17 series inventory is higher than last year’s iPhone 16 series (~86–88 million units). By August, planned production had already reached 90–92 million units, marking a significant increase. Although some component suppliers were concerned about potential overstock and possible fourth-quarter revisions, Apple’s production schedule reflects a pre-planned pricing strategy.

The inventory increase is mainly concentrated in the Air models, which now account for a substantial share. Apple aims to boost iPhone sales by providing consumers with more choices through the Air lineup.

Q2: How is iPhone 17 production in India? What is the total expected output?

A: Indian production has attracted much attention. Current iPhone production in India involves:

  • Tata Group: At least three factories, including Tata-owned, a Wistron-acquired plant, and a Pegatron-acquired plant, totaling roughly ten production lines.
  • Foxconn: Also has about ten iPhone production lines in Chennai.

Assuming a unit-per-hour output of 2,000–2,200 units, India’s annual capacity is estimated at 32–35 million units. Given that iPhone production in India is still new and yield rates are not yet as stable as in China, a conservative estimate suggests that Apple’s target of 50 million units produced locally this year is achievable.

Q3: Can India match China’s production efficiency? How long will it take?

A: China’s yield rates are excellent, with Foxconn achieving 95–97%. India’s yield is around 83–85%, below the 90% threshold, which is why conservative estimates are used for Indian output.

Apple is gradually shifting production away from China. Foxconn and Tata’s Indian plants can produce standard iPhone 17 models to meet part of the US demand. However, producing Pro and higher-end models in India remains challenging and will be a bottleneck over the next one to two years. Overall, India has room to improve, but Apple is steadily expanding capacity there, and both workers and machines are learning systems that should gradually catch up.

Q4: Besides India, which economies will benefit most from Apple’s “De-Sinicization” in the supply chain?

A: Vietnam is another major beneficiary.

  • India's expansion: Besides the iPhone, AirPods may be produced at Foxconn’s Indian plants this year, and iPads may begin production in India next year, reflecting India’s growing role in Apple’s supply chain.
  • Vietnam's Acceleration: Many contractors are setting up factories in Vietnam. Production of products like AirPods and Apple Watch could rise from roughly 10% to 15–20% this year, making Vietnam a clear beneficiary of supply chain relocation.

India and Vietnam are thus the primary winners in Apple’s “De-Sinicization” strategy.

Q5: Apple has differentiated chips between the standard iPhone 17 and the Pro models. How do you assess this performance-tier strategy?

A: Apple has released four models for the iPhone 14, 15, and 16 generations. Previously, standard and Plus models were considered entry-level with dual rear cameras, while Pro and flagship models targeted the high-end market. Plus models consistently sold poorly because consumers seeking larger screens often opted for the fully featured Pro version.

This year, Apple discontinued the Plus model and introduced the Air model, emphasizing an ultra-thin design. Air models have upgraded chips and RAM to attract higher-end consumers. The Air’s starting price (256GB) is USD 100 higher than last year’s iPhone 16 Pro, creating a USD 200 gap between the standard iPhone 17 and the Air. This establishes a clear “cut-off,” separating low- and high-end models.

This strategy follows the launch of the iPhone 16e (with the A18 chip) earlier this year, indicating a shift in Apple’s product planning: next year, high-end models (Pro, Pro Max, and foldables) will dominate the second half, while standard, e series, and "mini" series may be launched in the first half. Consumers may no longer need to wait until September to buy an iPhone, with more options available earlier in the year.

Q6: What are the RAM changes for the iPhone 17?

A: RAM in the iPhone 17 Pro (and adjacently tiered Air) has been increased from 8GB to 12GB. Although initially expected to support computing performance related to Apple Intelligence, no new AI functions were mentioned at the launch. RAM may increase to 16GB next year to meet the requirements of Apple Intelligence computing.

Q7: How is Apple’s self-developed 5G modem progressing, and what impact does it have on Qualcomm?

A: Apple’s self-developed 5G modem (C1) was first introduced with the iPhone 16e earlier this year, following a strategy of testing low-volume, entry-level models before scaling up.

Currently, only the iPhone 17 Air in this 17 series uses this modem. Apple claims speeds exceed last year’s iPhone 16 Pro with Qualcomm modems while reducing power consumption by 30%.

By the iPhone 18 series, all models may adopt Apple’s 5G modem, posing a concern for Qualcomm. If Apple’s 220–230 million annual shipments use in-house chips, Qualcomm’s baseband modem shipments could decline by over 20%.

However, Qualcomm holds core 5G patents and can collect royalties from companies using 5G chips, including Apple. So even if modem shipments and revenue fall, royalties can partially offset losses. Apple’s sheer volume impacts all suppliers significantly.

  • Foldables: The standout feature for the iPhone 18 series will be a foldable model. With many Android foldables already in the market, how Apple differentiates its design is highly anticipated.
  • Camera upgrade: The iPhone 18 Pro’s main rear camera may feature a variable aperture, a technology already seen in Huawei and Xiaomi devices. Large apertures provide shallow depth of field for portraits, while small apertures increase depth of field for landscapes.
  • Apple AI: Expected to launch more fully next year, though the novelty of features remains to be seen.
  • Foldable pricing: Apple targets the premium market. Current high-end Android foldables like Samsung’s 7th-generation model cost up to USD 2,000, and Huawei’s triple-fold model reaches USD 2,800. Apple’s foldable may range between USD 2,500–3,000, with improvements in thickness and crease management. In short, Apple products aim for top-tier positioning, and the foldable will be no exception.

Q10: Beyond the iPhone, what is next for Apple’s MR devices? Will there be a next-generation Vision Pro or new glasses-related products?

A: Apple’s AR/MR development has lagged behind competitors like Meta. The high price of the Vision Pro has limited adoption.

  1. Vision Pro: A minor revision may be introduced by year-end or early next year, mainly improving processor performance.
  2. Affordable version: A lower-cost Vision Pro is in development, though cost control and market acceptance remain key considerations.
  3. Smart glasses/AR glasses:
