What You Need to Know
Chinese AI processor rising star Cambricon has achieved explosive growth in both performance and stock price, while Huawei's AI processor performance is visibly improving at an accelerated pace. Cloud Service Provider (CSP) manufacturers represented by BAT (Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent) are increasing their AI capital expenditure. Since the start of the year, the market has been repeatedly repricing China’s tech competitiveness. Against the backdrop of US technology restrictions, how far has China’s AI breakthrough progressed?
Key Focus of This Article:
- How are China’s domestic AI processors gradually eroding the market share of US suppliers in the Chinese market and emerging into prominence?
- What factors are driving China’s relentless pursuit of compute localization?

In July and August, the Shanghai Composite Index rallied again, reaching a near 10-year high. At the same time, domestic AI processor newcomer Cambricon announced explosive Q2 results: revenue grew more than 4x YoY, net profit turned positive for the third consecutive quarter, and its stock price nearly tripled since early July. Meanwhile, on August 29, Alibaba, one of China’s largest CSPs, reported Q2 capex at a record high, reflecting continued heavy investment in AI infrastructure. Its cloud intelligence revenue surged 26% YoY (vs. 18% in Q1 2025 and 13% in Q4 2024).
Since February, a wave of factors — stronger-than-expected earnings for domestic AI chips, increased CSP spending, and the mushrooming of domestic large models such as DeepSeek — have pushed the market to constantly reassess China’s technological strength. After years of US technology blockades, how far has China’s AI breakthrough progressed?
